Northern State Grabs Two from the Presentation Dome

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team recorded their first NSIC sweep of the year on Thursday, defeating the University of Mary from the Presentation College Dome. Northern scored six runs in each game, notching a combined 19 hits.

Game 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wolves scored in the first at-bats of the contest, as Makenzie Merritt singled in Rachel Reinke who led off the inning with a single of her own
  • UMary tied things up in the top of the second, however Northern re-gained the lead in the third
  • Ashley Fauske opened the third with an infield single and came around to score on a ground-out by Elyse Cuttic
  • Merritt and Chanel Siebenthal also scored in the inning on a failed first and third pick-off attempt by the Marauder catcher
  • The Marauders were not finished in the game, grabbing a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning
  • NSU however rallied back in the sixth, notching two runs on two hits
  • Scoring for the Wolves in the sixth were Shelby Novotny and Siebenthal on a single through the left side by Elly Smith
  • Northern tallied six runs on nine hits and gave up three errors on defense
  • Meghan Anderson threw her seventh win of the season, giving up five runs (one earned) and seven hits, while striking out ten

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Marauders took an early 2-0 lead through their first three at-bats of the contest
  • Northern began to chip away in the bottom of the third on a double up the middle by Chanel Siebenthal, scoring Ashley Fauske
  • The Wolves tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning; Makenzie Merritt led off the frame with a double to right and scored on Siebenthal's triple
  • Siebenthal then crossed home plate on a sacrifice line out to center by Natalie Gabbert
  • The University of Mary grabbed the lead again in the sixth, nothing two runs
  • It was all Merritt in the bottom of the sixth, as the senior blasted her seventh homerun of the season to left, scoring Fauske and Rachel Reinke
  • The 3-run bomb gave Northern the 6-4 lead which held through the seventh
  • The Wolves tallied their six runs on ten hits, giving up one error on defense
  • Elyse Cuttic improved to 7-3 on the year, throwing a complete game win with four strikeouts
