Aberdeen, S.D. – The (RV) Northern State University (3-0, 3-0 NSIC) wrestling team travels to Marshall Thursday for their fourth dual meet of the 2021 season against Southwest Minnesota State (1-2, 1-2 NSIC). The dual will start at 6 p.m. from SMSU's PE Gym, kicked off by the additional matches.
Northern has three wins in three duals over No. 16 Upper Iowa, No. 25 UW-Parkside and Minot State. The Wolves' undefeated record places them tied atop the conference with No. 1 St. Cloud State.
NSU's last dual was against Minot State where the Wolves won six straight matches over the Beavers in the middle weights, leading to a 25-13 victory.
Despite not yet cracking the top-25 as a team, NSU has three wrestlers ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll. No. 8
Dayne Morton (133), No. 10
Kolton Roth (141) and No. 12
Caden Moore (157) are all ranked top-12 in the nation for their respective weight class.
The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State are led by Jackson Ryan (197) who is ranked fifth in the country and is undefeated on the season.
The Wolves are 9-16-1 all-time against the Mustangs in duals and only 1-5 in Marshall. NSU fell in the January 2020 matchup by a score of 18-14 when match wins from
James Burks and
Marcus Placide were not enough to overcome an early deficit.
This is the second-to-last regular season dual for Northern in 2021 and the program is in prime position for the top record in the NSIC and to have a handful of wrestlers nationally ranked going into the NCAA Super Region Tournament in Aberdeen.
