Wolves Face Off with No. 20 Peacocks in NSIC Opener Tomorrow

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team will open the season this Thursday traveling to No. 20 Upper Iowa University. The dual will kick-off at 7 p.m. in Fayette. The Wolves will compete in a typical dual versus the Peacocks, with a number of additional matches following the ten team scored matches.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • The Wolves kick off the season receiving votes in the NWCA Top-25 Poll, with two individually ranked wrestlers in No. 10 James Burks (157) and No. 12 Marcus Placide (184)
  • Northern was picked sixth in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll
  • NSU went 9-8 in dual competition a season ago
  • Marcus Placide was named the Wolves Wrestler to Watch for the season; he was named to the NSIC All-Conference second team at 184 pounds
  • Placide (27-7), Dayne Morton (24-7), Caden Moore (20-7), and James Burks (16-3) led the Wolves in wins in 2019-20
  • Northern returns 22 from the 2019-20 roster, while welcoming nine additions
 
#20 UPPER IOWA STORYLINES
  • The Peacocks were picked second in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 12-5 in dual competition in 2019-20
  • UIU placed second at the NCAA Super Region V Championships in 2019-20 and qualified five for the NCAA Championships
  • Upper Iowa returns two NCAA qualifiers in Chase Luensman and Dalton Hahn; Luensman was named the team's Wrestler to Watch for the upcoming season
  • Four Peacocks are in the most recent national rankings in No. 9 Tate Murty (141), No. 8 Luensman (157), No. 12 Myron Crawford (174), and No. 8 Hahn (184)
  • In addition, UIU is ranked No. 20 in the most recent NWCA Top-25 Poll
  • The Peacocks are led by head coach Heath Grimm in his 21st season at the helm
 
LOOKING BACK TO 2019-20
  • The Peacocks defeated the Wolves 22-13 in Aberdeen a season ago
  • Notching wins for NSU were James Burks (16-4 over Brock Benitz), Tanner Wiese (3-1 over Dalton Nelson), Marcus Placide (3-0 over Dalton Hahn), and Kenny Jones (10-3 over Tate Murty)
  • Northern is 0-15 all-time versus Upper Iowa, dating back to 2005
