Schoenhard Feature

Working on the Front Lines in Aberdeen

6/8/2020 1:16:00 PM

This feature is part of an on-going question and answer series with Northern State University student-athletes to share their stories and experiences off the field of play.

When Northern State senior Mallory Schoenhard began her part time work as a phlebotomist in the lab at Sanford Aberdeen this past fall, she could have never guessed the impact she would have on the community today. Schoenhard took on an increased role for the Wolves in 2019 and began a new career path at the completion of the season.

The Rapid City native will enter her final academic year at Northern State in the fall of 2020, but not before busy spring and summer in the lab. Although not in a national hotspot, Schoenhard is making a difference in the community she has called home for the last three years.

Did you need any certification or training? If so, did you get that through NSU?
Schoenhard: I did need certification and training, and this was all provided by Sanford. The training and certification entailed completing online courses and tests as well as performing the correct technique of venipunctures and capillary sticks.

How did you find out about this position and what drew you to it?
I found this position through Sanford's career page on their website. I have previously worked as a patient care technician and was looking for something that was similar, as I really enjoy working with patients. I knew that becoming a phlebotomist would give me a new set of skills, along with keeping that patient relationship that I value very much. I am very appreciative of Sanford for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their hospital!

How has your job in the lab changed in the last few months?
Schoenhard: My job here at Sanford has changed the most in what we are required for PPE (personal protective equipment). We now have to wear masks when we come into the hospital/clinic. Then wear a mask provided by Sanford while we work. Along with the mask that we wear while doing our job, we are required to wear a face shield as well. This protects us from debris and droplets entering our eyes. We also get our temperature taken every day before coming into work. We also practice social distancing by staying 6 feet apart from co-workers while we are not helping patients.

Is the lab here running any COVID-19 tests?
Schoenhard: Yes, the Sanford Laboratory here in Aberdeen is currently performing COVID-19 tests. This testing has been a recent addition to the lab and is very beneficial for patients as they can receive their results faster and can take the appropriate actions to protect themselves and the community.

What is your major at NSU and your future career goals?
Schoenhard: My major at NSU is Biology along with a minor in Chemistry. My future career goals are to hopefully go on to Physician Assistant school and work in a dermatology clinic.
