ABERDEEN, S.D. – A Northern State University alum and former NSU football player has joined the coaching staff for the Wolves.

Jeff Larson has been hired as the new defensive coordinator. An Aberdeen native, Larson comes to Northern from Mayville State University in North Dakota. As Mayville State's head football coach, he led the team to its first conference win in three years.

Prior to that role, Larson served as defensive coordinator at Nebraska's Chadron State College, where he was part of teams that compiled a 46-31 record, including one NCAA Division II playoff appearance. He also has previous coaching experience at Black Hills State University and Montana Tech of the University of Montana, as well as at high schools in Wyoming and Utah.

"Jeff is first and foremost a great person with a lot of coaching experience," said NSU Wolves Head Football Coach Mike Schmidt. "As an alum and Aberdeen native, he has a deep passion for NSU Football. I am really excited to be getting such a great coordinator who will have a great impact on our players' lives."

Larson graduated from Northern in 2000, majoring in health and physical education with a minor in coaching, and played linebacker for the Wolves football team.

"As an alum, I am extremely excited and humbled to be coming home and joining the coaching staff at Northern State University," Larson said. "There is a great foundation in place. I am eager to join Coach Schmidt and the rest of the staff to tackle the challenges of taking Wolves Football to the top of the NSIC. We will bring a defense to the Pack that will play fast, physical, and aggressive as we are flexible to get the most out of our athletes."
