No. 8 Northern State Opens 2019 with Back-to-Back Sweeps

Golden, Colo. – The No. 8 Northern State University volleyball team opened the season with a pair of sweeps over Alaska Fairbanks and Dallas Baptist University from the Colorado Mines Oredigger Classic. The Wolves out-scored their opponents 150-103 through the six sets of action, hitting above .300 in both matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern opened the match with a 25-17 victory in set one and quickly took set two with a score of 25-11
  • Alaska Fairbanks battled with the Wolves in the third set, however NSU pulled out the 25-19 victory after UAF tied things at 17-all
  • The Wolves combined for 47 kills, 45 assists, 40 digs, three aces, and three blocks in the win
  • The offense hit .351 through three sets, including a match high .458 in the second set
  • Defensively they held the Nanooks to 26 kills and a .089 hitting percentage
  • Three Wolves recorded double figure kills in the match

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern added 44 kills, 42 digs, 33 assists, six blocks, and four aces in the night cap, hitting .316 as a team
  • Defensively they held Dallas Baptist to a .132 hitting percentage, forcing 20 errors with just 32 kills
  • The Wolves hit a match high .364 in the first set, notching 17 total kills and held the Patriots to a match low .000 in the second set with just eight kills and eight hitting errors
  • Two NSU women finished the evening with double figure kills, while three notched multiple blocks

  • The Wolves continue the streak under Aldridge winning their ninth straight season opening match and eight straight via sweep
  • Through the first day of the Oredigger Classic Laura Snyder and Sally Gaul lead the competition with 29 and 25 kills respectively averaging 4.83 and 4.17 per set
  • Snyder also leads the tournament with 31.0 total points and sits second overall hitting .522
  • Ashley Rozell is second in assists with 80 total, averaging 13.33 per set
 
UP NEXT
The Wolves are back in action tomorrow from the Oredigger Classic with two matches versus Colorado Mesa and the host Colorado School of Mines. Both teams are currently receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Poll. First serve is set for 3 p.m. (CT) versus the Mavericks and 5:30 p.m. (CT) against the Orediggers.
