Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team split with Winona State on Senior Day from Fossum Field falling in game one 9-0, and coming back for the 12-3 victory in game two. The Wolves move to 20-24 overall and 13-19 in the league following the doubleheader.
The Wolves could not get things going offensively in the game one loss, as
Mikey Barreneche tallied the lone hit for the team.
Sam Krapf suffered the loss on the mound for the Wolves as he was plagued by defensive errors giving up nine total runs with just four earned.
Chase Tunstall entered and held the Warriors scoreless, however the Wolves were unable to rally in the final innings.
Northern rallied in the second game, jumping on the Warriors starter Krimmer in the bottom of the fourth. The Wolves batted through the line-up notching six runs on seven hits in the inning. Northern combined four five runs in the preceding two innings with two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Lucas Lorenz kept the runs flowing in the eight with his 12
th homerun of the season to the opposite field.
Lorenz led the team going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI. The junior also tallied one of three team doubles in the win.
Jack Schmidt and
Ben Allen were second on the team each going 3-for-4. Schmidt notched two runs scored, while Allen tallied one run scored and a team leading three RBI.
Ben Carolin,
Seth Sullwold, and
Zach Beatty added two hits each, while
Mikey Barreneche,
Chris Gonzales,
Tyler Gripentrog, and
Ashton Williamson notched one hit apiece.
In total the Wolves tallied 12 runs scored on twenty hits with four extra base hits and 12 RBI in the win. They batted .500 as a team and held the Warriors to a .265 average.
Louie Carlos started for the team, earning his third win of the season. Carlos threw 5.0 complete innings giving up two runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Thomas Sertic and
Isaiah Greene entered in relief to throw the final four innings. Sertic notched two strikeouts, while Greene held the Warriors scoreless through three innings of work with one strikeout and one hit given up.
Northern returns to Fossum Field tomorrow for their final home games of the 2017 season. The Wolves will face off against the Warriors beginning at 12 p.m. in a doubleheader.
