Baseball Drops Two Games to Wayne State College

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team was swept by Wayne State on Sunday from Fossum Field. The Wolves fell with game scores of 1-0 and 5-4, dropping to 17-23 overall and 10-18 in the league.
 
Wayne State tallied one run in the top of the second inning of game one, which was enough to seal the victory. The Wolves tallied just four team hits in the loss, led by Easton Lopez going 1-for-2 with a double. Lucas Lorenz, Seth Sullwold, and Jack Schmidt notched a hit apiece for the team.
 
Sam Krapf threw a solid game for the team pitching 6.1 innings with just one earned run. Krapf gave up just five hits and struck out four in the process. Kris Johnson entered in relief and held the Wildcats scoreless in the seventh with a strikeout and fly out.
 
Despite the Wildcats scoring first in game two, the Wolves came back to tie things at four runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh. Northern scored first in the third inning with three runs on four hits, leaving the scoreboard reading 4-3. Mikey Barreneche led off the seventh with a single up the middle, and came around to score on a single to left field by Jack Schmidt. Wayne State re-gained the led in the top of the eighth and the Wolves were unable to plate another game tying run.
 
Louie Carlos started for the Wolves giving up four runs on six hits with one strikeout. Thomas Sertic entered in relief throwing six complete innings. Sertic notched a season high eight strikeouts in the game. Johnson threw the final inning holding the Wildcats scoreless as the Wolves looked for a comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Ashton Williamson led the team in the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Mikey Barreneche, Jack Schmidt, and Ben Allen each notched two hits as well, while Jordan Malainey and Tyler Hair rounded out the team total with a single each.
 
Northern returns to action this Wednesday from Fossum Field against Minnesota Crookston. First pitch between the Wolves and Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1 p.m.
