Clermont, Fla. – The Northern State University softball team notched their sixth-straight win from the NTC Spring games with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame College and a 14-0 five inning win over the College of Saint Rose. After their fifth day in Florida, the Wolves are now 9-3 overall on the year.
Game One – Notre Dame College
Both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings of play, until the Falcons connected for an infield single with two outs to put a runner on. The following three batters walked to put Notre Dame on top 1-0.
Rachel Albright escaped the bases loaded jam by forcing a groundout back to the mound in the next at bat.
Northern State responded to the one run deficit in the bottom of the sixth when
Madison Rutter led off the inning with an infield base hit.
Lauren Kunz laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second.
Shayla Steinley duplicated a bunt of her own and the Wolves would sneak a run across, advancing home on a throw from first to third base.
The two teams stayed locked in at 1-1 until the Wolves were down to their last at bats.
Rachel Albright drew a walk for the Wolves with one out and
Kennady Thompson due up next to the plate. Thompson blasted a walk-off double to deep right center to score pinch runner,
Anne Jonas from first.
As a team, Northern tallied three hits off the bats of
Katelynn Dilts,
Kennady Thompson and
Madison Rutter, including doubles from Dilts and Thompson.
Senior
Rachel Albright earned her third-consecutive win from the mound, improving to 3-0 on the year. Albright held the Falcons to just four hits and one earned run while forcing 13 groundouts and nabbing three strikeouts.
Game Two – Saint Rose
Northern State took the early lead in contest two with a four run first inning. The Wolves extended the scoring margin in the top of the third inning as 17 at bats resulted in ten runs.
NSU connected for 11 team hits and 12 RBIs coming from 11 different batters.
Jenna Helgeson led the Wolves from the plate with two hits, one walk and two runs scored, followed by
Katie Dawson with a homerun, two RBIs and one run scored.
Lauren Kunz also hit a two-run homerun to center field to mark NSU's 12
th in as many games. Both
Jamie Fisher and
Madison Rutter each tallied extra base hits as well for the Wolves.
With the complete game shutout, senior
Missy Elkins improved to 3-2 overall on the year from the mound. Elkins held the Golden Knights to just two hits in 20 batters faced, collecting two strikeouts and forcing 11 groundouts.
Northern State will continue action from the Spring Games tomorrow at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. against Salem International University and Cedarville University.
