Tucson, Ariz. – The Northern State University baseball team notched their first victory of the 2017 season with a 3-2 win over No. 14 St. Cloud State. The Wolves improved to 1-1 overall with the non-conference win.
NSU scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with one run apiece in each inning. The Wolves also combined four eight team hits and hit .286 as a team. They were perfect on defense, giving up no errors, while the Huskies had one error and just five hits.
Jack Schmidt reached on an error to lead off the first, and was doubled in by
Lucas Lorenz the next at-bat, as the Wolves took the 1-0 lead. Northern tacked on another run in the fifth, as
Mikey Barreneche singled up the middle with one out. The senior advanced to third on a single to right by
Kolin Kubitz, and later scored on a single to center by Schmidt. The Wolves notched the third and decisive run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Ben Allen doubled with one out to lead off the rally.
Jordan Goracke walked the following at-bat, while
Easton Lopez singled to right scoring Allen.
Allen led the team going 2-for-3 in the win with one run scored. Six Wolves tallied a hit in the game including Barreneche, Kubitz, Schmidt, Lorenz, Goracke, and Lopez.
Louie Carlos started on the hill for the Wolves, earning his first win of the season. Carlos threw five complete innings, giving up just two hits and one walk.

Thomas Sertic, and
Luke Chevalier entered in relief for the Wolves, throwing the final four innings of action. Chevalier tallied his first save of the year, throwing a 1-hit ninths for NSU.
Northern will face NAIA opponent Briar Cliff in a double header today beginning at 10 a.m. (CT) from Tucson.
