Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball team opened their 2017-18 home slate with a 67-60 victory over Jamestown. The Wolves improve to 3-1 on the year, with just four non-conference games remaining this season.
It was a battle in the first half, as the two teams entered the locked room tied at 34-all. Northern quickly jumped out to a seven point lead just two and a half minutes in the second and did not look back. The Wolves tallied 33 points in the second half, while holding the Jimmies to 26.
As a team NSU shot 46.9 percent from the floor, 21.4 percent from the arc, and 40.0 percent from the foul line. The recorded a game high 48 points in the paint and 32 points off the bench. Northern added 19 points of 16 turnovers and 14 points off 13 offensive boards. Finally the Wolves out-rebounded the Jimmies 43-30 in the win.
Carter Evans led the team with his first double-double of the season. The senior tallied 21 points and ten rebounds, while shooting 90.0 percent from the floor. Evans added two assists, three blocks, and two steals for the Wolves leading the team off the bench.
Ian Smith led the NSU starters with 13 points, followed by Logan Doyle with ten. Doyle notched a team second best eight rebounds, while Smith tallied a team leading four steals and three assists. Gabe King and
Darin Peterka tallied five points each, while
DJ Pollard rounded out the starting five with two points of his own. Doyle was second on the team shooting 5-of-7 from the floor, at a 71.4 percent clip.
Justin Decker tallied six points and four rebounds off the bench for the Wolves in just seven minutes of action. He was followed by Andrew Kallman and Cole Dahl with three and two points respectively. Kallman added two assists and two rebounds to the team total, while Bo Fries was second on the team with two steals.
Northern returns to Wachs Arena on Monday evening, for a 7 p.m. match-up with the visiting Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State University.
