Box Score Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University women's soccer team dropped their first match of the 2016 season this afternoon in heart break fashion, falling to Southwest Minnesota State 3-2 in overtime. The Wolves are now 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NISC, while the Mustangs improve to 3-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
After 28 minutes of action, the Mustangs were first to open scoring. Morgan Weyer-Coates of SMSU connected with Alexandra Miskowiec for the first goal of the game. The Mustangs carried the momentum, finding the net once again just two minutes later as Amanda Hartmann caught senior goalkeeper,
Stacey Cavill, off line. Hartmann struck the ball into the net to put SMSU up 2-0.
The Wolves came back in the second half looking to make adjustments offensively. After being outshot 5-8 in the first 45 minutes, NSU bounced back by taking the first eight shots of the second half. In the 60
th minute, redshirt sophomore
Darian Leschewski was fouled, giving Northern State a penalty kick opportunity.
Sydney Shintaffer drilled the ball past Southwest State's Jessica Craigmile, cutting the Wolves' deficit to just one goal.
The two teams battled for the remaining minutes, until freshman
Sammie Zgutowicz found
Stephany Estrada on the counter attack. Receiving the pass near the net, Estrada tied the match 2-2 with 1:46 remaining on the clock to force a 10 minute overtime period.
Five minutes into the period, Amanda Hartmann of SMSU once again dribbled around Northern State defenders to find the net and put an end to the match. The Wolves suffer their first loss of the season in the 2-3 overtime game.
As a unit, NSU outshot the Mustangs 21-13, however, Southwest State was able to tally five more shots on goal. The Wolves compiled four corner kick opportunities, while SMSU attempted two.
Northern State's
Stacey Cavill finished with five saves, allowing three goals in nearly 95 minutes play. The Wolves offense was led by freshman
Stephany Estrada, who nabbed one goal, as well as two of NSU's three shots on goal.

Darian Leschewski each collected three shots on the day.
Northern State will continue NSIC action on the road against St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 23
rd, and then return home to take on Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 25
th.
