Mankato, Minn. – The Northern State University soccer team fell to Minnesota State 1-0 in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament this afternoon. With the loss, the Wolves conclude the 2016 season with an overall record of 9-9, finishing seventh in the conference standings.
Northern State battled against the No. 2 seeded Minnesota State, as both teams remained scoreless through the first half. The lone goal in the match came in the 67
th minute as Jenny Hoerter connected with MSU's lead scorer, Morgan Cottew. The sophomore struck the ball around Northern State's
Stacey Cavill for her 15
th goal of the season.
The Mavericks would go on to hold the 1-0 lead for the remaining minutes of the game to notch their 14
th victory of the season, and advance to the second round of the NSIC Tournament.
NSU was outshot 26-6 in the match, as Minnesota State tallied seven shots on goal to the Wolves' three total. Although the Mavericks maintained a bulk of possession, the Northern State defense held the team to a shooting percentage of .039. In her final game in net for the Wolves, senior
Stacey Cavill picked up six saves with just one goal allowed against an offense that led the NSIC at 45 total goals prior to the game.
Redshirt sophomore
Darian Leschewski led the NSU offensive attack with four shots, two of which being on pace for goal, while
Kay Hernandez and
Karli Harney recorded the two additional shots for the Wolves.
Seniors
Anna Bondy,
Stacey Cavill,
Kay Hernandez and
Bianca Rosa exhausted their eligibility playing in the final match of their careers. The four seniors aided the Wolves in making the conference tournament for the first time since 2009.
