Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – In a game played on their home field, the visiting Northern State University baseball team defeated Presentation College. The Wolves tallied seven runs in the top of the 11
th to capture the lead and secure the 14-7 victory. NSU improves to 20-19 overall.
Northern fell behind 0-5 in the opening innings of play.
Kassidy Gaines and
James Georgakas gave up a combined four runs in the second. The Wolves however fought back with three runs in the top of the third.
Lucas Lorenz homered with one out in the inning, scoring
Tyler Gripentrog and
Alex Cornwell.
The Wolves took the lead in the sixth, led off by
Riley Shintaffer with a double down the right field line. Shintaffer, alongside
Jack Schmidt and
Clayton Nutting scored in the inning, giving the Wolves the 7-6 lead. The Saints tied it up at seven all in the eight and the two teams were headed to extras after a scoreless final inning of regulation.
The bats came alive for NSU in the top of the 11
th with seven runs, off three hits.
Tyler Gripentrog led off the inning with a triple past the diving Presentation centerfielder.
Alex Cornwell scored Gripentrog with a sacrifice fly to left center.
Robert Fahlin tallied the Wolves second extra base hit of the inning, a double to right center with one out. A few PC miscues and a single by
Buddy Traxler gave the Wolves the seven run lead, with a nice cushion heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Gripentrog, Lorenz, and
Patrick Leary each recorded multiple hits in the win. As a team the Wolves tallied 14 hits in 44 at-bats.
Nate Zeise earned his first career win throwing two complete innings for NSU. Zeise gave up only one hit and struck out two in seven batters faced.
The Wolves return to Fossum Field this Saturday and Sunday versus Minnesota Crookston. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m., Saturday, and 12 and 2:30 p.m., Sunday.
