Photo Gallery Aberdeen, S.D. – The Wolves softball squad celebrated senior day, Sunday from Moccasin Creek Complex, coming away with a split against Upper Iowa University. The Wolves took game one with a score of 4-0 and fell in game two 3-14 in five innings of play. Northern moves to 28-18 overall and 15-8 in NSIC games.
Game One The Wolves took the lead in the bottom of the third with two outs and the top of the line-up at the plate.
Kelsey Gale reached base by virtue of a fielder's choice and subsequent error by the UIU shortstop.
Kalie Maiden,
Eryn Yancy, and
Rachel Albright combined for back-to-back-to-back singles, and the Wolves were up 2-0. Yancy and Albright recorded RBIs in their at-bats with singles to right and center field.
Kelsey Gale scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gale came around to score off Yancy's second hit of the game, a single to right center field.
Brittney Lash recorded the final Wolves run of the game, in the sixth with a bomb to deep center field. The homerun marked Lash's fifth of the season.
Senior
Kami Smesmo tallied her sixth shutout and 18
th win of the season, throwing a complete seven innings. The right-hander gave up eight hits and struck out two in the game.
Kalie Maiden and
Eryn Yancy led the team with two hits apiece in the win.
Game Two Northern fell behind early in game two, as the Peacocks put up a four spot in the first inning of play off NSU starter
Missy Elkins. Elkins threw three innings for the Wolves giving up seven earned runs off seven hits, while striking out two.
The Wolves scored three in the game, however were unable to fend off the hot, Upper Iowa sticks.
Rachel Albright led the team with two doubles, to left and right center field, and three RBI in the loss.
Kami Smesmo and
Rachel Albright entered in relief for Elkins throwing an inning apiece. Smesmo gaved up two earned runs and four hits, while Albright suffered one earned run and two hits.
Northern will play their final home games of the season this Tuesday versus University of Minnesota Duluth. The doubleheader was moved to Tuesday at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. between the Wolves and the Bulldogs.
