Bemidji, Minn. – The Northern State University baseball team came away with a pair of wins versus Bemidji State in NSIC action. The Wolves won game one with a score of 4-3 and game two with a score of 10-2. Northern improves to 9-12 on the year and 3-7 in Northern Sun Conference play.
Game One The Wolves scored first in the opening inning of play, lead off by
Eric O'Bryan with a walk. O'Bryan advanced to third in the next at-bat, as
Tyler Gripentrog doubled to right center.
Mark Abrahamson scored O'Bryan on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
Bemidji answered back in the second, third, and fourth innings with a run apiece. Northern however fought back in the sixth inning, with three runs of their own. Gripentrog hit his second double of the game, a gapper to left center, to start the Wolves rally.
Lucas Lorenz followed that up with a single down the left field line, scoring Gripentrog on the play.
Buddy Traxler plated Lorenz two at-bats later with a single through the left side.
Riley Shintaffer scored the deciding run for the Wolves, off
Robert Fahlin's single to left. Northern had taken the 4-3 lead, scoring three runs off four hits in the inning.
A combination of start
James Georgakas and
Dillon Lee held the Beavers in the bottom half of the inning to keep the NSU lead intact. Lee finished out the game for NSU, throwing 1.2 innings, giving up no hits and striking out one. Georgakas tallied his third win of the season, striking out five, while Lee notched his second save.
Game Two Northern pounded out four earned runs to start off game two, combining for five singles and one double.
Eric O'Bryan,
Tyler Gripentrog, and
Lucas Lorenz hit back-to-back-to-back singles to open the game, followed by a
Mark Abrahamson double to left.
Riley Shintaffer and
Clayton Nutting also singled and tallied an RBI a piece in the inning.
The Wolves scored in five of the nine innings played, with all ten runs being earned.
Riley Shintaffer and
Lucas Lorenz led the team with four hits each, while Shintaffer tallied four RBI and Lorenz two. Northern tallied a season high 19 hits in the win, as a total of seven guys notched a multiple hit game.
Marcus Manderbach and
Erick Cervenka teamed up for NSU in game two, with Manderbach coming away with his first win of the season. Marcus threw 4.2 innings giving up two earned runs on six hits. Cervenka held the Beavers scoreless in 4.1 innings on the mound, giving up two hits and striking out six.
Up next for Northern is the 2015 home opener versus Southwest Minnesota State. The Wolves are slated to match-up with the Mustangs Friday and Saturday at 4 and 6:30 p.m. from Fossum Field.
