Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team sailed into the second round of the NSIC Tournament after a 35 point victory over Southwest Minnesota State. The 77-42 win, improves the Wolves to 23-6 overall heading into a rematch with the Augustana Vikings
in the quarterfinals. Northern started the game off right with a 17-4 run over the Mustangs led by senior
Rachel Krogman. Krogman tallied eight points in the first seven minutes of play, while leading NSU with a total of 23 in the game. She tallied her 17
th double-double of the season adding ten rebounds to the mix.
Megan Mutchler and
Paige Waytashek notched 11 points apiece, while Mutchler tallied eight rebounds behind Krogman.
The Wolves shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the win, while holding the Mustangs to a mere 27.8 percent. NSU tallied 13 more rebounds than their opponents, notching 21 second chance points. Northern's key success in the game, was 27 points off 15 forced SMSU turnovers.
The NSU bench compiled 19 points, led by freshmen
Miranda Ristau with eight in the game.
Sami Smith and
Lauren Deadrick were next in line with four points and piece, while
Alexis Tappe added two.
Devon Brecke recorded a team leading four assists, combined with seven points and three rebounds in 26 minutes of play. Mutchler matched Brecke's four assists, and added two steals of her own.
Sadie Stotesbery led NSU with three steal, and notched six points and five rebounds.
Krogman led the Wolves going 9-of-15 from the floor.
Paige Waytashek was second on the team shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and tallying one of the team's two three-point baskets.
NSU moves on to the second round of the NSIC Tournament to face Augustana College. Augie took the first game of the season at home, 59-57, and the Wolves look to come back in the game two rematch. The Wolves and the Vikings will tip off at 12 p.m., Saturday, from the Sioux Falls and the Sanford Pentagon. Ticket information for all games from the Sanford Pentagon can be found below.
