Wrestling NSU Sports Information

Voegeli and Gomez Lead Wolves from Inaugural SD Showcase

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team went 1-2 from the first annual South Dakota Showcase and the Sanford Pentagon. The Wolves defeated Dakota Wesleyan 38-12, and fell to South Dakota State, 36-12, and Augustana, 31-12. NSU is now 3-3 in dual competition.
 
Augustana University Dual
 
C.J. Voegeli opened the scoring for the Wolves versus the Vikings, in his first match of 2015. Voegeli pinned Jeremiah Peterson at 3:16 to bring NSU within one of Augie, as the scoreboard read 7-6. Augustana broke away in the next two duals, however Sean Havlovic pulled the Wolves back in. Havlovic tallied a 9-6 decision victory over Bruce Lemon, earning three points for NSU.
 
With the Wolves down 25-9, Joe Gomez earned his first victory over the day. Northern's 197 pounder defeated Clayton Wahlstrom 5-3, earning three more team points. NSU ultimately fell in the non-conference dual 31-12.

South Dakota State Dual
 
After a tough battle in his first match of the day, Carson Henry led things off for the Wolves versus the Jackrabbits. Henry defeated Kahlen Morris by fall at 2:03 and the Wolves were on the board. Just two matches later, C.J. Voegeli tallied his second victory of the day, a 8-2 decision over Jaxon Fitzgerald.
 
Joe Gomez continued his solid day with a 3-2 decision victory over Ben Schwery at 197 pounds. The Wolves 12 points against the Jackrabbits were the most of any of South Dakota's competitors on the day.

Dakota Wesleyan Dual
 
Northern opened the dual with an 18-0 run by Carson Henry, Ben Cauffman, and Kenny Mcaleavey who all won by forfeit. Voegeli continued the streak with his third win of the day, a 9-0 major decision victory over Tanner Wonch. Grant Steen earned his first victory of the Showcase, putting the Wolves up 25-0. Steen took down Skyler Ingwerson by virtue of a 4-3 decision.
 
The Wolves rounded out the upper weight with three victories at 174, 184, and 197. Anthony Navarro tallied a 12-3 decision over Nick Woslum and David Murphy defeated Isaac Rangel by injury default, for the pairs' first victories of the day. Joe Gomez tallied Northern's final victory of the day, with a 6-3 decision over Matt Schirado.
