Bismarck, N.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball team fell to University of Mary 60-58 on the road. Northern drops to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC, while the Marauders improve to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in the league.
The Wolves trailed 27-24 at halftime, however fought back to gain the lead with under nine minutes to play in the second half. The Marauders did not let down easily as they chipped away at the six point NSU lead with three minutes remaining and capitalized on missed field goals by the Wolves.
Darin Peterka led NSU with 13 points and six rebounds and was the only Wolf in double-digit scoring.
Carter Evans,
Ian Smith, and
DJ Pollard each notched nine points in the game, while Smith and Pollard tallied five boards a piece.
Michael Schreiber tallied seven points, followed by
Skye Warwick and
Bo Fries, with five a four respectively.
Northern shot 36.7 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from 3-point range. Although the Marauders did not shoot much better at 38.5 percent and 23.5 percent, Mary tallied 14 points off 15 NSU turnovers.
As a unit the Wolves recorded 11 points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, 17 points of ten offensive boards, and 22 points off the bench. It was a battle throughout as each team gained the lead on four occasions and five ties were recorded. U-Mary out-rebounded Northern 39-31, however the Wolves tallied a game leading 17 points from the foul line.
The Wolves will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to take on Minot State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the women's game.
