Wolves Open NSIC Play Tomorrow at MSUM

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University men's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow, as they travel to No. 9 MSU Moorhead for the NSIC regular season opener. The Wolves and Dragons will tip-off at 8 p.m. following the women's game. 

The Wolves enter the NSIC opener with a 1-2 record in non-conference play against Arkansas Tech, Harding University, and Southwest Minnesota State. Seniors Skye Warwick and Spencer Pankonin have already recorded career highs this season with 26 points each versus Harding and Southwest.  Northern has played well this season, however has struggled to close out games, falling in the final seconds to Arkansas Tech and in overtime to SMSU. NSU is shooting 49.2% from the floor and 46.1% from 3-point range and have four starters averaging double-digit scoring in the opening three games of the season.  DJ Pollard has been solid for the Wolves averaging 12.7 points, a team leading 7.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. Mack Arvidson has been a weapon for the Wolves off the bench averaging 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.9% from the floor. 

About the Dragons
    • MSU Moorhead enters the match-up 5-1 overall and ranked No. 9 in the NABC Top-25 Coaches Poll. 
    • The Dragons are led by head coach Chad Walthall in his sixth season with the program. Walthall has recorded a career record of 227-114 and a 111-45 record at MSUM. 
    • NSIC North Division Preseason Player of the Year, Isaac Sevlie leads the team offensively averaging 22.3 points per game. Sevlie also leads the team averaging 7.7 rebounds per game this season. 
    • The Dragons are shooting 46.4% from the floor, 33.1% from 3-point range, and 68.7% from the foul line as a unit. 
    • Tyler Vaughan has tallied 28 assists in six games played and Aaron Lien is leading the team with 12 3-point baskets made. 

Last Match-Up
    • The Wolves fell to the Dragons twice in 2014-15 with scores of 75-55 and 106-86. 
    • Sevlie led MSUM with 17 points, as the team shot 50.0% from the floor in the game one win. 
    • Northern struggled offensively shooting 36.5% from the floor and 21.1% from 3-point range. 
    • DJ Pollard and Spencer Pankonin led NSU is the second match-up of the season with 20 and 18 points respectively. NSU tallied 42 points off the bench in large part to Pollard and Pankonin. 
    • Four Wolves and four Dragons tallied double-digit points in the game, while MSUM edged the Wolves shooting 57.9% from the floor to Northern's 55.8%. 
    • A total of 24 points off of 13 NSU turnovers made the difference in the game.
