Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State volleyball team was tested against University of Sioux Falls tonight in only their third five set match of the season. The No. 2 Wolves came out on top taking the final set with a score of 15-12. Northern moves to 21-0 on the year and 13-0 in league action, while the Cougars slide to 10-12 overall and 2-11 in the conference.
Northern came out of the gates taking the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-19. Sioux Falls fought back in the third and fourth, defeating the Wolves 25-23 and 25-22. The Wolves recorded 83 points, 74 kills, 70 assists, and 83 digs in the win. The Cougars used the power of the serve in their favor tallying seven total aces, and were tough at the net with 13 blocks.
The Wolves hit .241 as a team in the win, led by
Mandy Kurosky with a .326 mark. Kurosky added 16 kills, six digs, and three blocks in the win.
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves in kills with 20 in the match, averaging 4.00 per set. Chambers tallied a double-double adding 11 digs.
Tori Biach and
Cari McGarvie were the final two Wolves in double-digits with 17 and 13 kills apiece.
Annika van Oosbree led the NSU defense with a career high 21 digs. She was followed by
Renee Hoffman with 19 and
Drew Smith with 11. Smith added 63 assists in the win, bringing her career total to 4,400. The senior is now 14 assists away from capturing the school record. Drew added three kills and four blocks in the game.
Kellie Schmit notched the team's final kills with five, while adding three blocks.
Northern will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State. The Wolves and Mustangs will face-off at 3 p.m. from Marshall.
