The Northern State volleyball team split its two matches on the second and final day at the Nebraska Kearney Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic. The Wolves opened the day with its third consecutive sweep of the tournament as they defeated Western State (Colo.) 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21. NSU would finish the classic with its first defeat of the year as ninth-ranked Nebraska Kearney bested the Wolves 25-22, 25-16 and 25-21.
Against Western State, Northern was led by
Kelsey Chambers' 13 kills. Chambers also added five digs in the sweep for the Wolves.
Mandy Kurosky added 10 kills and
Tori Biach recorded nine. Biach and
Cari McGarvie each led the Wolves with three block assists in the match as Northern recorded 14 total blocking assists in the win.
Drew Smith recorded her second consecutive double-double in the match as she recorded 43 assists for the third time during the classic. Smith also added a team-high 13 digs.
Annika van Oosbree had 12 digs and
Renee Hoffman added six in the back row.
NSU hit .343 as a team against Mountaineers while Western hit .118.
Against UNK, Kurosky and McGarvie led Northern with nine kills each. McGarvie also led the Wolves with four block assists in the loss. Biach and Chambers each added eight kills while Biach hit a team-best .500.
Smith had another solid match from her setter position as she had 39 assists against the Lopers. Hoffman led the team with 11 digs. UNK hit .430 in the match while NSU hit a season-low .246.
Northern (3-1) returns to action next weekend as it hosts the NSU Dakotah Bank Volleyball Classic Sept. 12 and 13 inside Wachs Arena.
