The 21
st-ranked Northern State volleyball team will travel to play its first road NSIC matches of the season this weekend as the Wolves face third-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 7 p.m., and then face-off with Minnesota State Saturday at 4 p.m.
Northern is coming off a 3-sets-to-1 victory over MSU Moorhead Tuesday night in Wachs Arena to open conference play. NSU was led by
Kelsey Chambers' 19 kills.
Cari McGarvie added 12 kills and a team-best seven block assists in the win while
Drew Smith recorded 56 assists against the Dragons.
Concordia-St. Paul, who is the defending seven-time National Champions, come into Friday's match with a 7-2 record on the season. The Golden Bears' two losses came at the hands of No. 2 Tampa and Minnesota State in the NSIC-opener. CU already has three victories over top-25 opponents this season and is led by Anna Schlaak's 111 kills this season. Riley Hanson and Emma Lange are second and third on the squad with 92 and 85 kills, respectively while Lange leads the team with a .341 attack percentage.
Minnesota State enters the weekend with a 5-3 mark and has notched wins over Dominican (Ca.), Bentley (Mass.), Upper Iowa, Black Hills State and Concordia. The Mavericks are led by Krista Hassing who leads the team with 130 kills (4.33/set) and is second on the team with a .319 attack percentage. Setter Ellie Van De Steeg is averaging 12.8 assists per set this season.
The Wolves went 2-0 against Minnesota State last season with both wins coming in Mankato, Minn. Northern was 0-3 against the Golden Bears in 2013, including a loss in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
