Wolves Take NSIC Opener Over Dragons

The No. 21 Northern State volleyball team opened NSIC play Tuesday night with a come-from-behind victory over MSU Moorhead inside Wachs Arena. After dropping the first set to the Dragons 25-18, the Wolves rallied to win the next three sets, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 to improve their record to 8-1 overall on the season.

For the match, both teams were fairly even with NSU hitting .297 for the match while Moorhead (5-4) hit .215 as a team. The Dragons hit .353 in the first set while NSU hit just .162. However, the Wolves turned it around hitting .279, .394 and .371 in the next three sets, respectively, while MSU Moorhead hit .225 in the second set and .167 and .128 in sets three and four, respectively.

NSU had four with double-digit kills and was led by the All-American Kelsey Chambers who had 19 kills while hitting .357. Cari McGarvie added 12 kills and a team-best seven block assists while Tori Biach chipped in with 11 kills and had five total blocks. McGarvie and Biach were very effective, hitting .435 and .429, respectively in the match. Hailey Busch added 10 kills and a team-high 11 digs as she recorded her first career double-double.

Drew Smith led the Wolves with 56 assists (14 per set) while also contributing with nine digs and a pair of blocking assists. The back row duo of Renee Hoffman and Annika van Oosbree had 10 and seven digs, respectively on the night.

Northern totaled 24 block assists in the four sets while the Dragons had 14. Moorhead also served the ball better, recording two aces and two service errors, while NSU had just one ace and four errors.

The Wolves return to action this weekend as they hit the road for a pair of tough conference matches. NSU will play at second-ranked and seven-time defending National Champion Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Northern faces Minnesota State in a 4 p.m. contest. The Mavericks defeated CU Tuesday evening 3-1.
