St. Cloud, Minn. – The Northern State University softball team fell in two road games versus St. Cloud State. The two teams went the distance in game one for Northern's first extra-inning match-up. The Wolves slide to 13-27 overall and 6-18 in the NSIC.
Game One The two teams went scoreless through seven innings of play as the Wolves recorded only three hits.
Kelsey Gale led off the game for NSU with a single to right and a stolen base. Gale was the only base runner for the Wolves until
Courtney Moore added her own single in the top of the sixth.
Eryn Yancy recorded the final hit for the Wolves in regulation a single through the left side.
Going into the top of the eighth inning, with a scoreless scoreboard,
Lindsey Hubler doubled to center field and was in scoring position. The next three batters however were unable to connect and left Hubler stranded in the inning.
St. Cloud answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs and the win. Larkin's three RBI home run with one out in the eighth was all the Huskies needed to secure the victory.
Kami Smesmo went the distance for the Wolves, throwing 7.1 innings and striking out six SCSU hitters.
Game Two The Wolves recorded eight hits in game two and had five opportunities to score with runners only 120 feet from home.
Macey Engel score the lone run for NSU in the game off a sacrifice fly by
Ashley Clapp in the fourth. Engel along with
Kelsey Gale and
Lindsey Hubler recorded two hits in the game apiece making up 75 percent of the Northern offense.
Northern's two other hits in the game came off the bats of
Kalie Maiden and
Katelynn Dilts who each notched doubles in the loss.
Missy Elkins started the game for NSU, throwing 4.2 innings while giving up four earned runs off ten hits.
Rachel Albright entered the game in relief of Elkins in the fifth and recorded one strikeout in her 1.1 innings on the mound.
The Wolves will return home for their final regular season contest of the 2014 season this weekend against University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University. Game times are currently set for 1 and 3 p.m. both days. Saturday has been deemed senior day, and the Wolves will honor
Lindsey Hubler between games.
