Wolves Hold Strong After Two Days at NSIC Championships

Rochester, Minn. – After two days of tough competition, the Northern State University swim team sits pretty at the NSIC Championships. The squad has compiled four school records thus far, along with seven top ten finishes in the two days. "This meet gets faster and more competitive each year." said head coach Elyce Kastigar, "I am pleased with the performance from our team and with the freshman coming in and performing well under the tough competition and pressure."

Northern will compete in preliminaries and finals both Saturday and Sunday from Rochester to round out the conference meet. First race times are set for 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Day One Results

Freshman standout Katelyn Rhodes led off the night for the Wolves securing an eighth place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with her school record time of 10:44.39. Mikalea Waiflein and Brianna Iverson placed 18th and 20th respectively in the race as well.

The second school record of the night was set by senior Sara Peterson with a time of 25.24 in the 50 freestyle, garnering her a 12th place finish in the event. Peterson was also a member of the 200 medley relay team alongside Amanda Taylor, Samantha Gunning and Eliza Jacob which came in fifth at 1:51.22.

The duo of Gunning and Taylor notched ninth and 12th place finishes in the 200 individual medley. As a team, the Wolves recorded 102 points in the first day of competition.

Day Two Results

The night began with the 200 freestyle relay team of Katherine Springer, Ashley LaFave, Rhodes and Peterson recorded a sixth place finish coming in at 1:40.54. Also placing 11th in the event was the relay squad of Hannah Mastel, Abby Ottenbacher, Kamie Wagar and Iverson.

Samantha Gunning was back in her usual form in the 400 individual medley with an eighth place, school record breaking time of 4:41.56. Waiflein also performed well in the event hitting the wall in 16th. Gunning went on to place seventh in the 100 butterfly just shy of her school record at 58.44. In the final individual event of the night, Rhodes continued to shine placing 11th overall in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.78.

Amanda Taylor brought home the final school record of the day for NSU with her 100 backstroke spilt time of 58.52. Taylor was a member of the 400 medley relay team of Gunning, Jacob and LaFave. The squad garnered a fifth place finish with their team time of 4:02.99.
