Northern State lost its second game of the weekend Saturday night inside Wachs Arena as the Wolves fell to Upper Iowa 76-70. Northern has now lost four of its last five games.
Tydan Storrusten led the Wolves tying a career-high with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting and went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.
The loss drops Northern to 14-8 overall and 9-7 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa improves to 10-12 overall and 8-8 in the league. Joey Woods led the Peacocks with 24 points and five assists.
The Wolves struggles from the floor in the first half, shooting 36 percent on 9-of-25 shooting while UIU hit 15-of-28 for 53.6 percent and led by as many as 12 in the opening half, 38-26 with 1:14 to go. Northern went on a run to close the gap to 38-32 going into the break thanks to five points from Storrusten. In the second, UIU built its lead back up to as many as 11 at 54-43 with 9:01 remaining in the game. NSU finally caught fire and went on an 11-1 run to cut the lead down to just one with 6:32 remaining.
The Wolves would eventually battle all the way back to tie the game at 63-63 with 3:42 remaining but couldn't quite get over the hump as the Peacocks hit nine free throws down the stretch. Upper Iowa made 21-for-27 (77.8 percent) from the stripe including 17-for-21 (81 percent) in the second half. UIU led for most of the game as the Wolves' final lead of the game came at 6-4 in the opening minutes of the game.
Skye Warwick added 10 points in the loss for Northern while
Seth Bachand added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Trent Zomer also added nine points and
Carter Evans scored six points and pulled down five boards in the loss.
For the game Northern shot 41.2 percent from the floor (21-for-51) but hit just 4-of-16 (25 percent) from three-point range. UIU made 43.4 percent from the field (23-for-53) and hit 9-of-22 from deep (41 percent).
Upper Iowa held a 13-6 advantage on points off of turnovers. As it forced 15 Northern turnovers and committed just nine of its own. The Peacocks outscored the Wolves' bench 22-19 in the contest while Northern held a 34-24 edge in points in the paint and also an 11-5 advantage in second-chance points. Northern collected 15 offensive rebounds in the loss and had a 40-31 edge on the boards.
The Wolves return to Wachs Arena for a pair of contest next weekend as Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State come to town. UMD will be the opponent Friday at 8 p.m. and SCSU comes to town for a 7 p.m. tip Saturday. Northern split its meetings with St. Cloud and Duluth last weekend as the Wolves lost to SCSU 79-71 and defeated the Bulldogs 80-78 on the road.
