The Northern State men's basketball team shot nearly 56 percent and went 11-of-22 from three-point range, but it was not enough on Saturday night as the Wolves fell on the road at No. 19 MSU Moorhead 106-86. Both of NSU's losses this season have come to the Dragons.
The Dragons (13-1, 5-1 NSIC) shot 58 percent (33-for-57) from the floor in the contest and made 8-of-20 (40 percent) from three-point range. MSUM went 32-of-42 from the free-throw line while the Wolves (10-2, 4-2 NSIC) went 17-for-22.
Moorhead held a big advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Wolves 33-20 and scored twice as many second-chance points (12-6). The big difference in the contest came in points off of turnovers as MSUM scored 24 points off 13 Northern turnovers. The Wolves scored 13 points on 10 Moorhead turnovers.
DJ Pollard led Northern with 20 points in the loss. Pollard went 10-for-11 from the free-throw line and was 5-of-10 shooting.
Spencer Pankonin added a career-best 18 points, going 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the game.
Skye Warwick added 15 points and three assists while
Seth Bachand scored 13 and had a team-high seven boards.
The Wolves kept within striking distance for most of the first half, before Moorhead went on a 14-2 run the final 3:56 of the half and went into the break with its biggest lead of the game, up 48-30. MSUM maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game with Northern cutting the deficit to as close as 11 as all in the half.
Northern will next return to action in 2015, as Winona State and Upper Iowa will come to town Jan. 2 and 3. WSU and Northern will tip at 8 p.m. that Friday while the Upper Iowa contest will begin at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena.
