Photo GallerySeth Bachand scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and Northern State shot nearly 61 percent from the field in the second frame to earn a come-from-behind overtime victory over Southwest Minnesota State Wednesday night inside Wachs Arena in non-conference action.
The Wolves (3-0) got off to a slow start on both ends of the court Wednesday as they shot just 35.5 percent (11-for-31) from the field in the first half while Southwest (2-1) shot 53 percent (18-for-34). The Mustangs built their lead to as big as 17 points, at 35-18 with 5:39 left to go in the half but NSU was able to go on a bit of a run to close and trailed 41-30 at the break.
Northern opened the second half on a 19-9 run and cut the Southwest lead to 50-49 with 13:04 left to play. The Wolves took their first lead of the game since early in the ball game with 10:05 left, at 58-57, however SMSU looked to regain control and went up by five again less than two minutes later. The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way and were tied at 80 each with just 21 seconds remaining.
Skye Warwick missed a runner with four seconds left and Southwest's desperation heave at the buzzer was no good and the game went to overtime.
In the extra frame, Northern made just two baskets but went 8-for-10 at the free throw line. One of Northern's two field goals came with 1:15 left on a
Mitch White three-pointer that pushed the Northern advantage to 87-82. From there, the Wolves hit six free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. SMSU went just 3-of-9 from the floor in OT and were 0-for-4 from three-point range.
Northern finished the game shooting 47.8 percent (33-for-69) and went 9-for-22 (41 percent) from beyond the arc. Southwest made 51.6 percent (33-for-64) of its shots and was 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from deep. The Wolves held an advantage at the charity stripe, making 75 percent of their free throws (18-of-24) while the Mustangs went 13-for-22 (59 percent).
Northern outscored the Mustangs 46-34 in the paint and 17 to 12 on second-chance points. The Wolves also scored 20 points off of 16 SMSU turnovers while Southwest scored 12 off of 13 Northern miscues. The Northern bench also held a slim 27-26 advantage in the victory.
Bachand finished the night going 7-for-9 from the floor and also added six rebounds.
Darin Peterka scored 19 points, had three assists and a game-high four steals in the win. White chipped in with 12 points and
Jake Johnson scored a career-best 10 off the bench. White also added six boards, four assists and two steals. Mitch Weg led the Mustangs with 17 in the game.
Northern continues its long homestand Sunday when the Wolves host Truman State in a non-conference tilt beginning at 3 p.m.
