Women's Hoops Headed to Wayne State Tournament

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University women's basketball team will begin regular season play this Friday and Saturday at the Wayne State NSIC/MIAA Crossover Tournament. The Wolves are slated to play regional opponents Northwest Missouri State and Nebraska-Kearney. NSU will tip off with Northwest at 8 p.m., Friday, and Kearney at 6 p.m., Saturday, from Rice Auditorium. Both games will feature live stats, live webcast, and radio commentary. Aaron Scheffler, the voice of the Wildcats, and Justin Raulston will commentate the games on ESPN Radio Aberdeen. 

The Wolves opened the season in exhibition against South Dakota State University, with a 64-80 loss.
Senior Rachel Krogman led the team with 13 points and six rebounds in the game, as she shot 5-12 from the floor. Lauren Deadrick made an instant impact under the basket pulling down 11 rebounds on the day, while tallying three blocks. Deadrick added five points of her own in the loss. 

The Wolves ended the 2013-14 season with a trip to the NCAA Central Regional and the NSIC North Division crown. NSU was 24-7 on the year, and 17-5 in NSIC play. Rachel Krogman was a full court threat for the Wolves, scoring 464 total points and racking up 301 total rebounds. The squad outscored their opponents by nearly nine points a game and led the league in rebound margin at +8.3 on the year. Krogman was an All-NSIC second team selection, while Megan Mutchler was named to the All-Defensive team and true freshmen Paige Waytashek was named to the All-Freshmen team.

About Northwest Missouri State

The Bearcats were picked ninth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, as Northwest was 10-17 last season and 7-12 in MIAA play. NWMSU returns senior Ariel Easton, who averaged 15.7 points per game last year and earned All-MIAA third team honors. Sophomore Shelby Mustain is the second returning starter from a season ago. She started 21 games and averaged 5.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in her first year with the Bearcats.

NSU vs. NSMSU All-Time

The Wolves are 1-1 against in Bearcats all-time with the last match-up coming in 2001-02. The Wolves took the game 67-63 that year. 

About Nebraska-Kearney

The Nebraska-Kearney Lopers return two starters and three reserves who helped the team to win 10 games in 2013-14 and reach the first round of the MIAA Tournament. The Lopers were picked 13th in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior post Amarah Williams is back after leading the Lopers in scoring (13.6), rebounds (6.7) and blocks (33). Also shooting 48% from the field, she joined Zimmerman on the all-league squad.

NSU vs.UNK All-Time

The Wolves are 7-2 all-time against the Lopes with the last match-up coming in 2012-13. The Wolves took the game 69-58. The schools' first contest came in 1978-79, with a 69-57 Wolves win.
