th annual Gypsy Days game Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Swisher Field.
The Wolves are 1-3 under Head Coach
Tom Dosch on Gypsy Days and lost last season's wild contest to MSU Moorhead 47-46. Northern beat Minot State two years ago on Gypsy Days 31-17.
Northern (2-2) is coming off a thrilling 46-43 victory over Southwest Minnesota State last weekend in Marshall, Minn.
Nathan Shaw hit the game-winning 36-yard field goal with one second left to propel Northern to the win. The Wolves racked-up a season-best 539 yards of total offense. The 539 yards were the most for NSU since accumulating 635 against U-Mary in 2012.
Nicholas Truen led the Wolves with 129 yards rushing and two scores against the Mustangs while
Jared Jacobson accounted for 332 yards of total offense and three scores (two rushing, one passing). Jacobson now needs just 49 total yards to move into fifth-place on the NSIC's all-time list for total offense in NSIC games. Jacobson has 7, 518 yards of total offense for his career.
Jared Hannigan led the Wolves' receivers with six catches for 106 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown catch from Jacobson for his first career score. Defensively, the Wolves were led by
Devin Olson's nine tackles while
Channing Barber had a pair of interceptions and
Joe Parsley also had a pick. Barber and Parsley's two picks on the season are tied for the second-most in the league.
Truen is currently eighth in the NSIC averaging just under 83 yards rushing per game this season. Barber and his twin brother Zachery rank first and second in the league, respectively in yards per kickoff return. Channing is averaging 36 yards per return while Zachery is averaging 31.4.
Scouting the BeaversTyler Hughes is in his first season as the head coach with the Beavers. Minot State enters Saturday 0-4 but their opponents are a combined 14-2 on the season. Minot has have played two ranked opponents in Sioux Falls and Minnesota State and have also played Upper Iowa who is undefeated this season. The Beavers are coming off a 20-17 loss last weekend at home to Wayne State.
Minot has used two quarterbacks so far in 2014. Last season's starter Zac Cunha leads the team with 421 yards passing and three touchdowns while Crosby Jensen has thrown for 387 yards. Glyn Borel leads the team with 262 yards receiving and has all three of the Beavers' receiving touchdowns. Borel is a true deep threat as he is averaging 26.2 yards per reception this season. Leon La Deaux leads the squad with 17 catches on the year.
Minot State has been running back by committee this season as three players have recorded 25 or more carries on the year. Jarvis Mustipher leads the team with 97 yards rushing on 35 attempts while Spencer Morrow has gotten 32 carries for 77 yards and Joel Panteau has 25 rushes for 57 yards. Defensively, the Beavers are led by Levi Freidt who has a team-high 46 tackles on the year, including 4.5 for loss and also has a sack.
The SeriesNorthern leads the all-time series 9-6-1 and has won the last three contests against Minot.
Last MeetingNSU won a 22-21 come-from-behind thriller last season up in Minot. Jacobson hit
Michael Alberts from a yard-out with just four seconds to play and then kept the ball himself for the game-winning two-point conversion.
ForecastSaturday's temperatures are expected to be in the low-50s with partly cloudy skies. Winds are projected to be 10-15 MPH out of the northwest.
