Moorhead, Minn. – The Northern State University swim team was back in action this weekend at the MSU Moorhead Invite. The Wolves place third in the four team tournament with a team score of 508; with no divers in competition NSU placed well competing four less events. The hard to beat Dragons took the meet with a team score of 1194.
As a team Northern saw 12 top three finishes in the two day meet from a variety of swimmers. The top swimmer on the weekend for the Wolves was
Katelyn Rhodes with three top finishes in individual events and two top finishes in team relays. Rhodes finished second just behind Gunning in the 200 fly with a team of 2:18.17 to start off her individual racing on the weekend. She proceeded to place third in the 200 free and take first in the 500 free at 5:24.65.

Sara Peterson, and
Samantha Gunning secured the first place finishes by over two seconds with a time of 8:13.05. Northern placed three other relays on the weekend with the third place 200 medley relay beginning the meet. The 400 free relay squad of Gunning, Rhodes, Springer, and Peterson took third in the race, while the 400 medley relay of Taylor, Gunning, Jacob, and Peterson placed second.
One other Wolf, Gunning, swam to a first place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:17.59. Throughout the meet Sam placed second in the 400 individual medley and fifth in the 100 free alongside her placing relay teams.
Amanda Taylor was the third NSU swimmer in the meet to record three individual places in the top ten beginning with a finish in third in the 200 back. Taylor would bump up a spot taking second in the 100 back, before rounding out the meet in fourth place in the 200 individual medley.

Brianna Iverson and
Mikaela Waiflein finished three and four respectively in the 1,650 free.
Eliza Jacob and Katherine Springer each recorded two individual wins on the weekend to add to the NSU team score. Jacob took fourth in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke, while Springer took second in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 breast. The sprinters for the Wolves,
Ashley LaFave and
Sara Peterson finished third in the 50 back and 50 fly respectively.
NSU swimming will spend the next three weeks training for the NSIC conference meet which begins February 6
th from Rochester, Minnesota. The NSIC Championships will run Thursday through Friday with preliminary and final events each day. Historically the Wolves have seen some of their best race times each season at the NSIC conference meet, alongside some very tough competition.
