WINONA, Minn. - The 17th-ranked Winona State Warriors turned a couple of Northern State strengths against them while handing the Wolves just their second road loss of the season Friday night, taking a 75-59 win over the Wolves in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's baksetball action.
NSU slips to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the league with Friday night's loss. WSU improves to 19-3 and 13-2 in the loop.
Normally a sure-shooting team on the plus side of the rebounding game, Northern State converted on just 38.3 percent of its shots, going 23-for-60 from the field and 6-for-11 from the line (54.5 percent). The Warriors, in contrast, were 27 of 64 from the floor (42.2 percent) and 14-for-16 from the line. Both teams hit seven three-pointers.
The Warriors also out-rebounded the Wolves by a 45-33 margin, including a 16-9 edge on the offensive glass. Northern State entered Friday's contest ranked second in the league in both offensive rebounds and rebounding margin.
Northern State matched the host Warriors blow-for-blow in the opening minutes of the game, but a 23-5 run by the Warriors over the next five minutes of play gave Winona State an 18-point cushion.
NSU cut it to 11 by halftime and to single digits in the early going of the second half. Freshman
Mack Arvidson hit a big three-pointer to make it a five-point game at 46-41 with 16:11 to go. The Warriors pushed it back out to double digits with the next two buckets, gradually extending it to as many as 19 points before ending with the 16-point advantage.
NSU was led by senior
Collin Pryor's 14 points and 11 rebounds, those largely coming in the second half. Fellow senior
Dustin Tetzlaff added 12 points, while freshman
Skye Warwick came off the bench for a trio of three-pointers and ended with nine points in reserve.
The Warriors got 26 points from Grant Johnson off the bench. Johnson went 10-for-12 from the floor and canned 3-of-5 treys in the effort. Clayton Vette added 21 for WSU.
The Wolves remain on the road to close out a four-game road swing at Upper Iowa on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. in Fayette.
