Trent Zomer scored a career-high 24 points (10-for-17) and pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds to record the first double-double of his career as he helped lead Northern state to a solid 79-64 win over Minnesota, Crookston Friday night in Aberdeen.
The Wolves (8-2, 3-1 NSIC) won their third consecutive game in the win and improved to 4-0 in home NSIC openers under Head Coach
Paul Sather. NSU shot 45 percent for the game while holding the Golden Eagles to 39.6 percent from the floor.
NSU came out of the gates on fire as the Wolves scored the first 11 points of the game in the first 2:11 of the contest. Northern dominated much of the game and led by as many 21 points in the first half and carried a 46-25 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Wolves led by as many as 28 at 72-44 with 8:09 to play, UMC (4-4, 1-3 NSIC) went on a bit of a run at the end of the game when it was well in hand and cut the Northern lead down to 15 on two occasions.
Northern was much improved on the glass Friday night as it out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 45-34 and also scored 14 second chance points while pulling down 16 offensive rebounds. Five of those offensive boards came from Zomer in the win. The Wolves dominated inside as they held a 52-20 advantage in paint points and also had a 26-19 edge in bench points.
The NSU defense swarmed all game as it scored 19 points off of 16 Crookston turnovers. Northern recorded 11 steals and three blocks in the victory while committing just nine turnovers of its own.
Skye Warwick had 16 points for the Wolves in the win, hitting four three-pointers and also pulling down four rebounds.
Michael Schreiber had a solid game off the NSU bench as he added 11 points to go along with six boards and a pair of steals.
Mitch White added seven points in the contest.
Tydan Storrusten led the Wolves with five assists in the game while
Jared Hannigan added four helpers and led the team with three steals. In addition to his scoring and rebounding, Zomer also contributed three assists, two steals and a block while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Northern returns to action Saturday to conclude its weekend doubleheader as Bemidji State comes to town for a 7 p.m. game. As always, Saturday's contest will be played after the NSU women tip-off at 5 p.m.
