Men's Basketball Falls in NSIC Opener

The Northern State men's basketball team shot a season-low 40.7 percent from the floor as the Wolves lost their NSIC opener at MSU Moorhead 87-76 Saturday night. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for NSU and is the first time the Wolves have lost an NSIC opener under Head Coach Paul Sather.

Moorhead (5-0, 1-0 NSIC) out-rebounded Northern (5-2, 0-1 NSIC) 49-29 in the game and scored 19 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds. For the first time this season, the Northern bench was outscored as the Dragons held a 47-28 advantage in that statistic and also held a 32-22 edge in points in the paint.

Northern got off to a strong start and led by as many as 10 with 10:38 to go in the first half at 22-12. However, the Dragons would close-out the half on a 17-6 run and led 29-28 at the break.

MSU Moorhead built its lead up in the second half to as many as 17 on two separate occasions, the last coming with 2:59 to go in the ballgame. Skye Warwick tried to bring the Wolves back down the stretch as he hit four three-pointers in the final three minutes of the game. Warwick tied a career-high with six made three-pointers and led the Wolves with 18 points in the loss.

Tydan Storrusten added 16 points, four assists and three steals in the loss. Jared Hannigan added 13 while Seth Bachand scored 11 and had a pair of blocks in the game. Trent Zomer led Northern on the glass with nine boards and also had three blocks against the Dragons.

Moorhead hit 26-of-31 free-throw attempts (84 percent) on the night while Northern went 18-of-22 from the line (82 percent). Northern held the advantage 13-9 in points off turnovers in the contest.

The Wolves will return to action next weekend for a pair of road contests in North Dakota as NSU faces Minot State at 8 p.m. December 6 and U-Mary in a 6 p.m. contest December 7.
