Soccer Salutes Seniors, Ends in 1-1 Tie with Marauders

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University Soccer team ended the 2013 season with a draw against University of Mary with a score of 1-1 through double overtime. The Wolves finish the season 8-8-2 overall and 5-8-2 in the NSIC. Neither team qualified for the NSIC Tournament, marking their last games of the season.

Northern says good bye to six seniors who will move on to bigger and better things in their future as all member will continue their education in graduate school, medical school and a degree in mortuary science. This class as made an impact throughout their years compiling a cumulative GPA of over 3.75. Head Coach Steve Kehm and the Athletic department applaud; Laura Linscheid, Khachirha Tugas, Hilary Peterson, Miranda Brower, Tia Lopez and Katelyn Kippes for their efforts as a wolf.

The Wolves went down by a goal part way through the first half of play after a threatening cross was sent in by Marauder Mykala Benjamin, resulting in a Northern State Own Goal. Ameilia Taylor answered back with her first goal of the season with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. The ball managed to hop just over the Mary keeper and safely into the back of the net.

Each team continued to see chances throughout the final minutes of play. After a failed shot attempt by the Marauders with seconds remaining Anna Bondy entered a breakaway. The Mary keeper had left her post in a last minute attempt to win the game. With the clock ticking down Bondy took the shot from about midfield which rolled into the back of the Mary goal just seconds after time had run out.

The two teams entered overtime with eight total shots on goal in the 20 minutes of extra play. Brittany Tietz tied her career high 11 saves as a wolf in the game, making many key plays in the effort. NSU was again led by Bondy and Allie Macdonald who each totaled three goals and one shot on goal.

Both teams ended the season in a tie and look to 2014 with new beginnings. Northern State's Steve Kehm will look to replace six key players and three starters in the year to come.
