The Northern State men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting its first doubleheader of the evening Monday night when the Wolves host Mayville State. The women's game is set for 6 p.m. while the men are slated to tip at 8 p.m. inside Wachs Arena.
The Northern State women are coming off a 56-43 win over Central Methodist (Mo.) Saturday to push its record to a perfect 3-0 overall on the year. The Northern men have won four consecutive games since its season-opening loss and are 4-1.
Scouting the Mayville Women
The Comets are 5-0 this season and are beating its opponents by an average of 47 points per game so far this year. Mayville State has broken the 100-point barrier twice and scored at least 90 points in all five games this season. MSU is in the top-10 in the NAIA in 16 statistical categories and lead the nation in assists per game (25.6), blocks (6.8), defensive rebounding (37), scoring margin, total rebounding margin (18), field goal percentage defense (28.7) and field goal percentage (51.5).
Who to Watch
Northern is led by
Rachel Krogman's 12.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in 2013-14. Krogman has a pair of double-doubles already this season.
Alison Kusler is averaging 11.7 points per game while freshman
Paige Waytashek is scoring 11.3 a contest. Kusler also leads Northern with 10 assists on the year, while Saide Stotesbery leads the team with four blocks.
Mayville has four players scoring in double figures this season. Marcisa McMillan is averaging 22 points per game to lead the Comets while Liza Hoglo scores 18 a game and Hailey Longtin and Sabrina Rude are averaging 16.6 and 14.8, respectively. Kay Laforet leads the NAIA in assists averaging 7.3 per game. McMillan leads the nation in blocks averaging 4.4 per contest. Rude's four three-pointers made a game rank second in the nation.
Scouting the Mayville Men
Mayville State is led by second year head coach Dan DeWitt. DeWitt has a 13-18 career record with the Comets. The Comets have played four exhibition games already this season against NSIC opponents (MSU Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Bemidji State and St. Cloud State). MSU is very stingy defensively as Mayville is top-10 in the NAIA in steals per game (8
th) and three-point field goal percentage defense (9
th). Mayville's 6.75 turnover margin is third-best in the nation. The Comets are 3-1 on the year.
Who to Watch
Northern State has been balanced this season with its scoring attack as its top three scorers are averaging 14.8, 11.8 and 11.4 points per game this season from
Seth Bachand,
Skye Warwick and
Trent Zomer, respectively. Bachand and Zomer also lead the Wolves in rebounding averaging 6.4 and 5.8, respectively per contest. Warwick leads NSU in three-point shooting as he has hit 15-of-33 from deep (45.5 percent). Zomer and
Jared Hannigan lead the Wolves with 11 assists each this year while
Mitch White has 10 helpers for Northern.
The Comets are led by Charlton Wilson's 13.3 points per game. Michael Lindsay and DJ Carroll each average 10.3 per game. Wilson is shooting an incredible 68.8 percent from the floor this year as he has made 22-of-32 shots.
