Wolves Swimming, Top Dogs at Morningside Mustangs Challenge

Sioux City, Iowa – Bolstering the spot as the top team, Northern State University Swimming took the Morningside Mustang Women's Challenge by storm. NSU topped both the Mustangs of Morningside College and the Cougars of Minnesota Morris in Friday, Saturday swim action. Northern compiled a large point spread between themselves and the Mustangs as they took top honors with a team score of 277.5 to 91.5. Likewise the Wolves outscored the Cougars 267 to 116. NSU has now secured a strong start to their 2013 campaign.

The Northern squad tallied either first or second places finishes in all races they participated in except for one. Eight different Wolves finished in the top of their heats with Amanda Taylor and Eliza Jacobs each totaling five on the weekend. Samantha Gunning led the attack for NSU winning six races and taking second in all others.

First place finishers for the Wolves included: Gunning (400 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay, and 200 Fly), Taylor (400 Medley Relay, 200 Back, 200 Medley Relay, 200 IM, and 100 Back), Jacobs (400 Medley, 100 Breast, 200 Medley, 50 Breast, and 200 Breast), Katherine Springer (400 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay), Katelyn Rhodes (200 Free, 400 Free Relay, and 500 Free), Sara Peterson (400 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay , and 50 Fly) and Ashley LaFave (50 Back).

Nine different Wolves also placed second in their heats throughout the weekend including: Hannah Mastel, Abby Ottenbacher, Mikaela Waiflein, Elizabeth Cvrk, LaFave, Gunning, Rhodes, Peterson, and Springer. These finishes are just what the Wolves needed to propel them into the thick of the 2013 season.

Northern will be back in action from their competition home at the Aberdeen YMCA next Friday November 8th beginning at 6 p.m. NSU will take on the Cobbers of Concordia College.
