Craig Bagnell passed for 282 yards and two scores and Vince Ferrante rushed for 124 yards on 17 carries and also had two touchdowns as Northern State lost to U-Mary Saturday afternoon 28-14 at Swisher Field.
The loss is Northern's (3-6, 2-3 NSIC North) second consecutive defeat and first time it's lost to Mary since 2010. The Marauders wasted little time taking the lead Saturday as they scored on their first two possessions of the game.
The first score came off an NSU interception and went 75 yards on seven plays. On the second scoring drive, Mary went 80 yards on just five plays and took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
The Wolves would respond however as
Channing Barber scored from 15-yards out off of a
Cameron Pudwill blocked punt.
Northern's punt team was outstanding on the day as the Wolves blocked three punts total including two from Pudwill.
The turning point of the game came when Mary picked-off quarterback
Jared Jacobson for the second time in the game and scored with just 27 second remaining in the half and went up 21-7 at the break. The Marauders added another late score as Ferrante scored his second of the day from a yard out and took a commanding 28-7 lead.
The Northern offense got on the board the last play of the game as Jacobson hit Connor Doherty on a two-yards touchdown pass as time expired.
Doherty had a solid game for NSU as he led the Wolves with six catches and 67 yards receiving in the loss. Sean Schweichler had five grabs for 30 yards and
Tanner White caught four passes for 33 yards. Jacobson hit seven different targets on the day.
Schweichler led the Northern ground game as he carried the ball nine times for 62 yards in the game. Jacobson had 51 yards rushing while
Taylor Houchin carried twice for 18 yards.
The Mary defense was stout all day as it held Jacobson to just 22-of-47 passing on the day and also held the Wolves to 5-for-17 on third-down conversions and 1-for-4 scoring in the red zone. The Northern pass protection held up fine for the Wolves as Jacobson was sacked just one time in the game. U-Mary came into the game with a league-leading 28 sacks on the season.
Defensively the Wolves were led by Barbers eight solo tackles in the game.
Logan Dosch added seven stops and
Jayson Geditz had five.
Blaine Schmidt totaled four tackles and also recorded his third pick of the season. Pudwill and
Ikee Sirleaf each registered a half sack in the loss.
Northern will hit the road for the final time in 2013 next weekend as the Wolves travel to face Minnesota, Crookston in a 1 p.m. contest.
