Spearfish, S.D. – The Northern State University Women's Basketball team notched their second win of the season Saturday night, defeating Black Hills State University 77-67 on the road. The Wolves improve to 2-0 on the year after a win one night ago against SD School of Mines.
NSU was led by freshman
Paige Waytashek with a career high 24 points on the night. The leading point scorer for the night, Waytashek also nabbed three assists and seven three pointers. Junior
Rachel Krogman added 11 points for the Wolves with five rebounds.
Megan Mutchler, along with
Alison Kusler, led the team in rebounds with seven total on the night. Playing just shy of the entire game, Kusler was an all-around athlete on the court with five assists, 13 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, NSU shot a stellar 100% from the free throw line in the first half of play going a perfect 8-8. The story of the night for the Wolves was the 20 points scored off of the 13 Yellow Jacket turnovers. Northern was also able to stay in single digits with only nine turnovers on the night. NSU continued to out-rebound its opponents 33-25 in the match-up.
MacKinzie Magner and
Kara Hofschild added six and five points apiece off the bench for Northern adding a much needed spark. The squad's largest lead came with about three minutes remaining in the first half of play as the Wolves were up 40-24.
Northern will match-up against Central Methodist University next Saturday (11/23) for the 2013-14 home opener. Game time is set for 2 p.m. between the two teams from Wachs Arena in Aberdeen.
