Morris, Minn. – Coming off its fourth straight win the Northern State University Swim team defeated Minnesota Morris for the second time this season with a score of 122-113. The 13 event meet consisted of the 200 medley relay, 1,000 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 1 meter diving, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 3 meter diving, 200 breaststroke, and 200 freestyle relay. The Wolves competed in 11 events, as the squad houses no divers.
Once again
Samantha Gunning led the attack for the Wolves winning all three of her races on the night; 200 medley relay (1:58.56), 400 individual medley (4:56.00), and 200 butterfly (2:15.27).Gunning also broke the pool record with her time in the 200 butterfly. The 200 yard medley team of Gunning,
Amanda Taylor,
Eliza Jacob and
Sara Peterson are on a three race win streak against Minnesota Morris, Morningside College, and Concordia Moorhead.
Three other Wolves recorded two wins on the night adding much needed points to the team total. Along with being a member of the 200 medley relay; Taylor added a time of 2:20.55 in her win of the 200 backstroke, Peterson added a time of 56.37 in her win of the 100 freestyle, while
Katelyn Rhodes took both the 200 freestyle (2:01.34) and the 500 freestyle (5:20.90).
Brianna Iverson took the 1,000 freestyle by 28 seconds over the opposing Cougars.
The highlights of the night for both squads were the 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay where finishes were less than a second apart. The Wolves however were unable to take the top spot in either event. Jacob finished only .23 seconds behind UMM's Gastecki in the 200 breaststroke and the team of
Ashley LaFave, Katherine Springer, Rhodes and Peterson finished just .12 short of top honors in the 200 freestyle relay.
Northern will return to the Aberdeen Family YMCA next Friday (11/22) for their final home meet of the season. Meet start is set for 6 p.m. with Nebraska-Kearney.
