Mustangs Top Wolves in Final Seconds of Soccer Overtime

Aberdeen, S.D. - For the fourth game straight the Northern State University Wolves ended regulation play tied with their opponent Southwest Minnesota State. NSU dropped the heartbreaker to SMSU with only 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime period by way of Mustang leading scorere Miranda Cadena. The Mustangs who are currently second in the conference improve to 13-1 overall and 10-1 in the NSIC. The battling Wolves fall to 7-6-1 on the year and 4-6-1 in the league. With the loss, NSU falls to ninth in the NSIC standings as Minot State moved into the eighth position. Only the top eight teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the conference tournament.

Southwest broke through with the first goal of the game just six minutes in to period number one. Northern's spirits however were not diminished as they saw a variety of chances throughout the half. Sophomore Allie Macdonald continued her standout weekend for the Wolves as she tied up the score at one at 21 minutes in. The shot by Macdonal, in the midst of Mustang territory, came off the foot of Hilary Peterson who had controlled a Bobyye Pendelton shot just off the post. The Wolves stuck with the past ranked Mustangs throughout regulation play. NSU was able to connect for 16 shots in the match-up, five of which were on frame to goal.

Both the first and second overtime periods were played within the Mustang end a majority of the time. Northern had its chances with seven total shots between the two ten minute periods. With only minutes remaining in the game, Anna Bondy was left one versus one with SMSU keeper, Brienna Dehkes, who was able to capture the save and fight off a stellar Wolf attack. Bondy led the team with six shots in the game.

NSU will spend the next three games on the road beginning with a weekend doubleheader against University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University. The Wolves will match-up against the Huskies, Saturday from St. Cloud with a 12 p.m. game time. Northern will then travel south to Duluth, taking on the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
