ABERDEEN, S.D. -
Northern State used a goal in each half and a strong defensive effort in the waning minutes of play to take a 2-1 win over the visiting Upper Iowa Peacocks Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.  NSU senior Rachel Goslinga had a hand in each goal, scoring the first and assisting on the second.

Goslinga, NSU's leading scorer, notched her seventh goal of the season with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.  The senior took a long pass down the sideline from junior Tia Lopez, skinned the Peacock defense and fired a cross goal shot into the corner of the net to put the Wolves up early.

NSU freshman Alyssa Wilde tacked on what proved to be a key insurance goal 19 minutes into the second period.  Wilde took a crossing pass from Goslinga from the right side into the center of the field and headed it down and past UIU goakkeeper Amanda Smith.

The Peacocks got one goal back in the 78th minute off a corner kick and made a strong push in the final ten minutes of play, but the NSU defense withstood the pressure to preserve the win.

NSU goalkeeper Shaina Stein made six saves in the net for NSU.  Senior Renee Gittings also came up with a sliding kick save in the early going of the first half to keep the Peacocks off the scoreboard.

NSU picks up its second win of the NSIC slate with the victory and now stands at 3-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the loop.  Upper Iowa drops to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

The Wolves return to the road next weekend to face Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State in NSIC play.  Saturday's match in Crookston is set for an 11 a.m. start, while Sunday's match against the BSU Beavers is slated to start at 1 p.m.
