Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Augustana Vikings took the host Northern State Wolves to double overtime for the second straight game, finding the back of the net with 4:38 left in the second extra period to take a 2-1 win over the Wolves in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.
The Vikings improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league action. NSU slipped to 1-3-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in the NSIC.
Augustana struck first in the 33
rd minute when Payton Pry picked up a rebound shot and stuck it back in the net for the game's first goal. NSU tied it up almost exactly 10 minutes later on
Anna Woerle's first goal of the season, which came with just 2:26 left in the first half. Woerle picked up a long through ball from teammate
Rachel Goslinga and fired a cross-goal shot past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net to tie the game.
Neither team was able to put anything on the board in the second half despite identical stats of eight shots and four saves per team. Augustana nearly got a second goal midway through the half, but was whistled for offsides, wiping out the potential game-winner.
NSU recovered to put several shots on frame in the closing minutes and in the first OT period, but was unable to convert on any of them.
The Vikings took advantage of a long ball in the second OT period that went over the defense. AC's Jessie Huff picked up the ball and fired a hard shot at the goal. NSU junior defender
Hilary Peterson just missed a save, as she got a foot on the ball as it passed, but the momentum carried the ball into the net for the game-winner.
The Wolves now turn their attention to Wayne State, who fell 4-3 in overtime to MSU Moorhead on Saturday. Kick-off for Sunday's contest is set for 1 p.m. on Jerde Field.
