MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –
With both teams riding four-game win streaks, something had to give in Thursday's non-conference match-up between the Northern State Wolves and the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul. But for nearly nine innings of Game 1, the two sides refused to budge until Concordia manufactured a run in the top of the ninth.  NSU was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, leaving CU with the 1-0 win.  The Golden Bears also claimed a 3-1 win in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

NSU slips to 4-6 overall on the season, all non-conference decisions.  The Golden Bears move to 8-2 on the young season.

The Wolves were held to just three hits in the opener, but responded defensively to work around six Golden Bear hits, backing starter Nathan Nietfeld.  Two of CU's hits came in the 1-run ninth inning.  The Golden Bears worked the bases full with one out following a pair of hits and an intentional walk.  Nietfeld then got the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out, but the play allowed the runner from third to score.

Neitfeld took the complete game loss for NSU, allowing just the one run on six hits and a walk (intentional).  He also struck out six in the Wolves' first complete game appearance of the season.

The Wolves turned the tables in Game 2, out-hitting the Golden Bears 6-4 in the nightcap.  Brent Lawrence drove in NSU's only run in the top of the third with a two-out single that plated Cam Lehner from second.  Lehner started a string of three straight two-out singles for the Wolves in the inning.

That run tied things up at one run apiece, a score that would last until the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Bears worked a little two-out magic of their own.  CU used a walk, stolen base and a single to score the go-ahead run, then capitalized on the day's only error to plate an insurance run and go up 3-1 on the Wolves.

Max Myers gave the Wolves a little two-out hope in the top of the seventh, lacing a two-out double to the gap in right center.  NSU, however, was unable to capitalize, leaving the score at 3-1 in favor of Concordia.

NSU is back at it Friday morning, taking on Southwest Minnesota State in another non-conference doubleheader from the Metrodome.  First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
