ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State won six of ten matches, including three pins and a major decision to blast past the MSU Moorhead Dragons 28-12 on Senior Night, picking up back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual victories in the process.
The win moves NSU to 6-7 in duals this season and 2-4 in league match-ups with one non-conference and one NSIC dual left in the regular season.
The Wolves, who honored seniors
Benton Crow and
Donnie Bowden before the match, won three straight bouts to start the night, including two straight wins without scoring a takedown.
Blake Lundgren bounced back from a tough match last night and used an escape and a riding time point to win a 2-0 battle to start the night. Bowden followed with a pair of escapes and a riding time point to win 3-2 in the 174 pound match.
Junior
Chad Gibson followed with a 12-3 major decision at 184 pounds before MSUM's Eric Lehmann came from behind in the 197 pound match to put the Dragons on the board.
Returning national champion
Matt Meuleners returned momentum to the Wolves, however, with his 19
th straight victory in the form of a second-period pin at 285 pounds. All of NSU's final three wins, including Meuleners', came by pins with
Ian Muirhead picking up the win by fall at 133 pounds and
Neil Sell capping the night with a 40-second pin at 157 pounds.
The Wolves will face future NSIC opponent Minot State on Wednesday in Minot, N.D. before rounding out the dual portion of the season at U-Mary in Bismarck on Thursday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
