Wolves look to ride early momentum into weekend contests

Setting the Stage: Fresh off a big win over tenth-ranked Winona State on Tuesday, the Wolves get set to host their third and fourth teams - and their second ranked opponent - in eight days, starting Saturday with Minnesota, Crookston and continuting Sunday afternoon against 19th-ranked MSU Moorhead.  The Wolves dropped their last three games prior to the Christmas holiday break, but have come out fighting in the new year and will look to ride their newfound momentum into this weekend's contests.

Last Time Out:  The Wolves opened 2012 with a 71-66 win over Upper Iowa on Monday before outlasting the Warriors in a physical 60-58 victory on Tuesday.  NSU's Geoffrey Firmin drilled the controversial game-winner from beyond 35 feet in Tuesday's win, just the second made three of the season for the junior newcomer.  Dustin Tetzlaff was 6-for-6 from the line en-route to a game-best 16 points. Free throws were big in both games.  NSU started out just 6-for-15 from the line against Upper Iowa before going 16 of 18 in the game's final six minutes.

About UMC: UMC opened the season with three straight wins, but have dropped seven of their last eight since.  All four of their season victories have been against non-conference opponents.  The Golden Eagles, however, have not gone down without a fight, playing MSU Moorhead to a three-point game, a ranked Augustana team to six points, and Southwest Minnesota State to a seven-point affair.  UMC welcomes back leading scorer Akeem Cubie, who sat out last season but is back in full force  in 2011-12.

Last Season: NSU swept the season series with the Golden Eagles in 2010-11, earning a 75-65 win on the road on Jan. 8 that snapped what had been a seven-game losing skid for the Wolves. NSU also claimed an emphatic 94-67 win over the Golden Eagles at home on Feb. 5.  Then freshman Jared Hannigan hit five treys in four minutes and ten seconds in the first half to spark the Wolves to victory.

About MSUM: MSU Moorhead remains the last of the unbeatens in the NSIC, entering this weekend's play at 11-0 overall and 7-0 in league play. The Dragons cracked the NABC Top 25 poll for the first time earlier in the season and now stand at No. 19 in the latest poll, released on Tuesday.

Last Season: The two teams split last season's meetings with each team taking the home victory. MSU Moohead escaped with a 72-71 victory in early January, while the Wolves avenged that loss with an 86-80 victory on Feb. 4 in Wachs Arena.
