Pueblo, Colo. – The Northern State women's soccer team opened their 2011 season in victorious fashion, as they beat Colorado State University–Pueblo 4-1 on Friday evening in Pueblo, Colorado.
The Wolves set the tone early with junior transfer
Rachel Goslinga taking a mishandled ball from the CSUP goalkeeper and putting it in the back of the net at the 3:02 mark in the first half.
The Thunderwolves responded 17 minutes later when Gabby Gonzales was able to find the back of the net against freshman goalkeeper
Shaina Stein.
The tie game did not last long as
Haley Burns found an open Kachirha Tugas who then put the ball in the upper-right corner of the goal to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves did not look back, as Goslinga notched her second goal of the game off a loose ball header at the 36:05 mark in the first half.
Ashley Elliott added another insurance goal early in the second half, off of an assist from Goslinga.
Goalkeeper
Shaina Stein, playing in her first collegiate game, made 10 saves on 11 shots from the Thunderwolves.
The Wolves were able to take 19 shots, while placing 12 on goal.
Liz Royce lead with six total shots, placing 4 on goal. Goslinga had just the two shots but made them count, as she was able to put both in the back of the net.
The Wolves continue action on Sunday, Sept. 4th as they will take on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in a 4 p.m. start.
