Wolves shutout Wildcats

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State Wolves (4-3-0, 1-1-0 NSIC) picked up their first conference win of the season on Sunday, by beating Wayne State (2-3-1, 0-2-0 NSIC) 2-0 at Jerde Field.

Freshman goalkeeper Shaina Stein secured her second career shutout in the effort and the third Wolves shutout on the season.

After each team was unsuccessful to mount any momentum in the first period, the Wolves got onto the scoreboard seven minutes into the second period. Senior midfielder Ashley Elliott took a shot about 20 yards out, which was headed toward the upper-left of the net. The ball nicked the upper crossbar and went into the net. This was Elliott's fourth goal on the season.

Just 12 minutes later, the Wolves got on the scoreboard again when Tia Lopez found a streaking Rachel Goslinga on the right wing. Goslinga received the pass, dribbled to the goal line where she put a move on the defender to break herself free to put the shot on goal. The ball was able to find its way to the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Goslinga's sixth of the season.

With the 2-0 lead and the Wildcats unable to mount a charge, this is how the game would end.

Stein facing 20 total shots, stopped all seven that were placed on goal. The Wolves meanwhile were took seven total shots, placing four on goal while scoring twice. Elliott had three shots on the afternoon, putting two on goal with the goal scored. Goslinga meanwhile had two shots with her only shot on goal, being scored. Liz Royce and Lexi Jares had the other two shots for the Wolves.

The Wolves return to action on Saturday Sept. 24 as they take on Minnesota State in a 1 p.m. contest in Mankato, Minn.
