ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State Wolves (3-3-0, 0-1-0 NSIC) soccer team lost a hard fought double-overtime match in blustery conditions 2-1 to the Augustana Vikings (3-2-0, 1-0-0 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half, the Vikings controlled the play with the wind behind their backs. They were able to take 16 shots in the half, however only four of those were on goal. The Wolves took six first half shots, landing two on goal.

The best scoring opportunity of the Wolves came ten minutes into the match when off of a corner kick Renne Gittings and Liz Royce were able to get shots taken but both of them were blocked by the Viking defense.

The second half was an evenly played half. The Vikings reached the scoreboard first, 16 minutes into the half.  Midfield Mackenzie Trom passed the ball through the defense to an open Stacy Dally, who was able to beat the keeper for the goal.

At the 83 minute mark, the Wolves mounted a charge that would lead to a tie game. After a Rachel Goslinga corner kick to Lexi Jares, who put a shot on goal and was deflected out of bounds by Augustana goalkeeper Amanda Wagner, Goslinga took another aim at the corner kick. This time she found Liz Royce, who tapped the ball to Renee Gittings for the goal.

This score would be 1-1 at the end of regulation.

With 7:30 left in the second overtime period, the Wolves committed a foul just outside the penalty box setting up a free kick for Mackenzie Trom. Trom's shot went to the right of the Wolves wall and into the net for the game winner.

For the day, the Vikings took 30 shots, landing 12 on goal. The Wolves took 13 shots, landing 7 of them on goal. Senior Lexi Jares lead the Wolves with four shots, Goslinga took 3 shots, and Gittings had 3 shots including the goal scored.

Freshman goalkeeper Shaina Stein made 10 saves for the Wolves while Amanda Wagner of Augustana had 6 saves.

The Wolves return to action Sunday Sept. 18 against Wayne State in a 1 p.m. matchup at Jerde Field in Aberdeen.
